Burn the image to an EMPTY dvd with Disk Utility.Ħ) Download ATIFlash 3.79 or later from here: ħ) Unzip the ATIFlash 3.79 to the FAT partition you created on your mac. The easiest way to do this is to simply go here. But it's possible to just create additional partition there as FAT too.ĥ) Make a DOS boot disc. You can do this on your main OSX drive too I just don't like messing with Disk Utility and my main drive. I got the 5770 one.Ģ) You need to have a working mac graphics card in your system in PCI-E slot 1 just so you can do all this without problems and so you don't need a PC.ģ) Insert the 5770 in your mac in PCI-E slot 2 and connect the power cable.Ĥ) If you have an addition hard drive in your mac, or you have an empty HDD or the one you can tinker with, go to Disk Utility and create a partition on it as FAT. Here's what needs to be done, not really a huge issue:ġ) Get the ATI 5770 or 5870 card linked above. These are the cards you want to use for the seemless flashing:

I'm using it in Mac Pro 3.1 (early 2008).Īpple upgrade is $280. Then you can use most Nvidia and ATI cards these days right out of the box on your mac without the need to flash anything.įlashed ATI 5770 (possible for 5870) to work in Macs. radeon: probe of 0000:01:05.Any ATI 5xxx series and I think even ATI 6xxxx series cards excluding the 6890/6990 will work out the box with OSX Lion. r600_cp: Failed to load firmware "radeon/RS780_pfp.bin" radeon 0000:01:05.0: Direct firmware load for radeon/RS780_pfp.bin failed with error -2 I get a text console on booting the changed kernel and just after the network services start, the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor. I change the kernel configuration to be as follows:ĬONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE="radeon/R600_rlc.bin radeon/RS780_uvd.bin radeon/RS780_me.bin" radeon: probe of 0000:01:05.0 failed with error -2 radeon 0000:01:05.0: Fatal error during GPU init r600_cp: Failed to load firmware "radeon/RS780_me.bin" radeon 0000:01:05.0: Direct firmware load for radeon/RS780_me.bin failed with error -2 Xorg does not start either but the system is up because I can SSH into it absolutely fine.ĭmesg | grep radeon shows the following which indicates that RS780_me.bin also needs to be in the CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE line above (and therefore contradicting what is on the page): When I boot the system in this mode, I get a normal text console for the first part of the boot, then when it would normally switch to a framebuffer screen, the console goes black. In my kernel configuration (I build my own kernels and have been doing so on Gentoo since 2003), I have the following settings for firmware:ĬONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE="radeon/R600_rlc.bin radeon/RS780_uvd.bin"ĬONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE_DIR="/lib/firmware" RS880M Īs per the Radeon Gentoo Wiki page, the settings are as follows: "lspci" shows the built-in graphics card as:Ġ1:05.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.

I'm building an HP Proliant MicroServer with Gentoo under gentoo-sources-4.14.11 and having problems getting the Radeon driver to work - it's going to be a RAID media server, I just need a basic desktop to work and no need for proprietary graphics drivers.
